Daddy was a sailor, fought in the war
When I was born he was far from shore
And when he got back he was seldom home
Mamma raised three kids alone
Did her best to teach us right from wrong
An' she got along best with daddy when he was gone
Everybody's happy, everybody's sad
Everybody feels sorry, everyone get's mad
Everybody's hungry, everybody's blind
An' we all need help to find our way sometimes
And like anybody, I need love
Now I'm grown, got a family of my own
Done my best to make our house a home
And I still don't know what I ever did
Like daddy, you left for someone new
You say you love her, I doubt you do
But no doubt she means more to you than our kids
Everybody's lonely, everyone feels bad
Every heart's been broken, everybody's been had
Like a boat without a rudder tossed in a dark stormy sea
I've spent my whole life waiting for a sailor to come and rescue me
Everybody's happy, everybody's sad
Everybody feels sorry, everyone get's mad
Everybody's hungry, everybody's blind
An' we all need help to find our way sometimes
And like anybody, I need love
Like anybody, I need love
