There’s a man from the Salvation Army on the corner just ringing his bell
There’s a young girl of the night takin' her john to a cheap motel
There’s a bag lady walkin' down the sidewalk with a hood pulled over her head
And there’s a wino sleepin' in a cardboard box for a bed

And I know that somewhere all is merry and bright
But won’t somebody please tell me why there’s no peace on earth tonight

There’s a police detective at a crime scene eatin' a hot dog from a vendor
But he cannot find one single witness, ‘cause no one can remember
Across the street there is a dealer talkin' on his telephone
Sellin' drugs to a kid that just robed somebody’s home

And I know that somewhere all is merry and bright
But will somebody jus' tell me why there’s no peace on earth tonight

No children are a carolin', there’s molesters everywhere
I see porno and perversion but I don’t hear one single prayer
God is sending us a warnin' but we’re just too blind to see
There’s a song of salvation playin' but we cannot find the key

And I know that somewhere all is merry and bright
Oh, but won’t somebody please tell me why there’s no peace on earth
             tonight

Our minds are confused, there's so many that's been abused
Hearts, they are breakin', not knowin' what path to choose
Our soldiers are dyin' in a foreign land
Loved ones are just cryin' and trying to understand

There’s got to be somewhere all is merry and bright
Oh, but won’t somebody please jus' tell me why there’s no peace on
             this earth tonight
Won’t somebody, won’t somebody please tell me why there’s no peace
             on earth tonight
